If you want a smile-healthy Halloween in Spanish Fork, Utah, then our Buhler Dental Arts team recommends keeping up on oral hygiene, visiting your dentist for a checkup, and avoiding these five Halloween treats:
No. 1: Gummy Bears: A typical serving of gummy bears is about 20 bears, which contains about 30 grams of sugar. This is like eating just over seven teaspoons of straight sugar. Sugar is bad for your teeth because it feeds the bacteria in your mouth and promotes tooth decay.
No. 2: Gobstoppers: Because gobstoppers take a long time to break down, they’ll be in your mouth for a long period of time, which is not good. The longer the candy is in your mouth, the longer your teeth are exposed to the sugar. Also, if you bite down on the treat, there is a chance you can chip a tooth.
No. 3: Starbursts: Starbursts are sticky and sugary, which is a delicious but dangerous combination. Because they are so sticky, they will cling to your teeth for a long time. This makes you even more vulnerable to tooth decay.
No. 4: Tootsie Rolls: Tootsie Rolls are so chewy and sticky that they can pull dental work, like a dental crown or dental filling, out of place when you eat them. They also get stuck in the nooks and crannies of your mouth, exposing your teeth to the sugary particles for a long time.
No. 5: Blow Pops: Blow Pops have a sugary coating on the outside and gum inside, which is just asking for trouble. Not only does sucking on the sucker take awhile, but the gum is also loaded with sugar and it will stay in your mouth for an even longer period of time, thus promoting cavities.
If you do the things our dental team has recommended, then there is a high chance that you will have a strong and healthy smile this holiday season!
